Health Occupations Education

Health Occupations Education at Harford Technical High School is a three year program beginning in grade ten. Students are accepted into either the Nursing assistant or Sports Technician components of the program.

Grade Level Course Descriptions

Health Occupations 1 Combined Program (grade 10):

This introductory course provides a foundation for students interested in pursuing careers in a wide variety of allied health fields. Course content includes medical terminology, medical math, basic anatomy and physiology, rehabilitation concepts, team building and professionalism. Basic skills such as temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure and height and weight are learned. Students are exposed to a variety of career opportunities in the health care field via speakers, classroom activities and field trips. At the end of this year, students will pursue the Nursing Assistant, or Sports Technician tract.

Nursing Assistants:

Health Occupations II (grade 11)

The curriculum includes foundations of human growth and development, the disease process, infection control, and safety. The students learn and demonstrate nursing assistant skills in a classroom lab, which simulates the clinical setting. Students spend their first clinical time working at John Archer.

Health Occupations III (Grade 12)

This year provides a variety of internships and career experiences where students apply academic and practical knowledge in the clinical setting. The nursing assistant students will obtain the required clinical hours in a long-term care facility, qualifying them to take the state exam to become Certified Nursing Assistants. Once they obtain their C.N.A. they may sit for the federal Geriatric Nursing Assistant exam to obtain their G.N.A. certification.

Senior Year Nursing Assistant Internship Opportunities

  • Long term care facilities  

  • Private physicians offices

  • Medical surgical nursing units

  • Hospital departments including:

  • Operating room

  • Emergency department

  • Pharmacy

  • Central sterile

  • Materials management

  • Ambulatory care

  • Labor and delivery

  • Pediatrics

  • Medical offices

  • Radiology

  • Rehabilitation departments

Opportunities for Students after Graduation

Students who successfully complete the classroom and practical experiences within the Nursing Assistant Program and obtain the Certified Nursing Assistant status will be eligible to begin employment in a physician's office or hospital setting. Students who also pass the Geriatric Nursing Exam and obtain their GNA are eligible to obtain employment in long term care facilities.

Many students choose to pursue further education in a variety of health related fields.  Students who have continued their education in the health fields include radiology, nursing, and emergency medicine to name a few. They overwhelmingly state that their experiences at HTHS in the Health Occupations program helped them prepare for their chosen health careers

Sports Technician

The health occupations program was expanded to include aspects of sports medicine and exercise science in response to the growing demand for qualified people in the fitness and wellness field.

Health occupations II (11th grade)

Content builds on the 10th grade foundation, including the components of wellness, fitness assessment and how to design a conditioning program. Students will also learn and demonstrate the skills necessary to work as an aide in rehabilitation or sports medicine.

Health occupations III (12th grade).

This year provides a variety of internships and career experiences where students apply academic and practical knowledge in the clinical setting.

12 grade Sports Technician Internship Opportunities

Students will participate in internships during the senior year based on interest, classroom performance, and career goals.

Internships include, but are not limited to:

  • Area athletic clubs

  • Sports medicine treatment centers

  • Chiropractic practices

  • Rehabilitation centers

  • Orthopedic offices

  • Student athletic training with teams

  • HTHS weight room

Opportunities After Graduation From HTHS

Students who successfully complete the classroom and practical experiences will have the necessary background to obtain certification as a personal trainer or as a group fitness instructor (must be 18 years of age).  Students are also well prepared to continue their education at the college level.
