Brief Biography

I was born and attended public schools in Westfield, NJ.  I have two older brothers (one a video projection artists in Los Angeles, the other an organic farmer in Costa Rica).  I’ve been married for 28 years to Susan Barth Corwin, and we have four children, ages 17 through 26.

1.  Why are you running for this office?

Our country is headed in the wrong direction and it’s time for a change.  The Republican-controlled Congress has too often looked the other way when the president is incompetent or over-reaches, when corruption spoils the Congress, or one of their members goes astray.  My opponent supports his leadership and the president over 85% of the time.  My campaign gives the voters a choice this November – a choice for new ideas and new leadership.

2.  If you are elected, what do you intend to do to improve the quality of education in the United States?

  • Make early education more available to more children by expanding programs like Head Start, reading readiness and early literacy.
  • Improve K-12 by:
    1. Fully funding and making refinements to No Child Left Behind.
    2. Grants for qualified high school graduates pursuing a bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate.
    3. Bonuses for teachers that achieve excellence in high performing schools and those working in underperforming schools (that have achieved parity for existing teachers).
    4. Federal support for facility expansion and improvements.
  • Restore low- and no-interest loans and need-based grants for higher education.
  • Beef up vocational training opportunities.

3.  To date the United States has committed thousands of men and women and countless billions of dollars to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Should we continue to commit men, women, and dollars to this effort?  If so, why?  If not, why not?

I supported military action to defeat the Taliban and Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan.  I support continued resources to complete that mission.

I opposed giving the president authority to invade Iraq.  My opponent voted in favor of that resolution.  Now that this president has unleashed civil war in Iraq, and we have become occupiers, Congress must exert its authority to commit funds to a sensible plan for stabilization of the region and withdrawal of US forces.   I favor a multi-national approach to enforce a three-state solution (Kurdish, Sunni and Shiite) with a federal Iraqi authority to distribute oil revenues amongst the three states and assure their common security.

We can only achieve such bold action with a new commander-in-chief (which we will elect in 2008) and new leadership in Congress, which we will elect this November 7, starting with a new representative right here in Maryland’s first district.

4.  What in your mind is the biggest problem facing United States as it enters the 21st century and how do you expect to correct this problem?

Besides achieving a greater level of security by dealing with terrorists and rogue nations, we must build a stronger US economy that can compete in the global market place.  The US must become an export nation again – shifting the trade imbalance and bringing good jobs to American workers.

As a member of Congress, I will establish and fund an Advanced Research Projects Agency in the Department of Energy that will fast-track R&D of a safe, clean, renewable alternative to fossil fuels.  This will stop degradation of our ecosystem, stop sending petrodollars to terrorists, and make America an economic powerhouse again.
